Serena Yiu, Grade 2 Teacher

I was born and raised in Hong Kong. I grew up in a loving and devoted family. My dad is a pastor and my mom is a teacher so I have always been enthusiastic about inspiring others. I lived in Hong Kong for most of my life before coming to Canada to pursue further study. I have completed my Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Victoria in 2020 and gained teaching experience in three practicums and a year of teaching in Hong Kong.

Throughout my personal education background, I have experienced both teacher-centred classrooms and inquiry-based learning. These very different teaching styles greatly influenced my teaching philosophy. I believe the most efficient strategy to achieve student success is to allow students to discover and experience the joy of learning in an innovative and compassionate learning environment.

In my classroom, students are encouraged to use their gifts and talents to learn and build community with others. Students’ learning will be promoted through self-motivation, creativity and resilience to prepare them for the fast-pace, everchanging world. Most importantly, as a Christian educator, I desire to cultivate students with not only knowledge and skills, but integrity, discernment, growing in love for God, and service to our community.

When I am not teaching, I love spending quality time with friends and family. I enjoy good food, travelling, and reading. I have also recently found the joy of lettering and calligraphy.
